XPath plugin breaks jquery 1.2.1 attribute selector

Adding the jquery.xpath plugin on top of jquery v1.2.1 seems to prevent the v1.2.1 attribute selector from functioning: ie. with the plugin loaded
v1.1 syntax:
$("div[@id]").length
returns a value greater than 0 as expected
v1.2.1 syntax:
$("div[id]").length
returns 0 - which is not the same result as without the plugin loaded.
Is this the expected result? ie. should the compatilbility plugin break the new selector syntax?
